For kid-friendly fun, visit the Mississippi Coast Model Railroad Museum. You can see themed displays and be delighted by the Lego train display. In Gulfport, visit the US Navy Seabee Museum dedicated to the brave service members who served in the Navy's construction battalions.
Take a trip back in time on Biloxi beach, where you can tour Beauvoir. Beauvoir was Jefferson Davis's last home. The former President of the Confederate State of America wrote his memoirs here. Touring the site, you'll get to see the restored antebellum mansion and the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library.
The Beauvoir mansion was commissioned by James Brown in 1848. The name Beauvoir means beautiful to view, and the antebellum mansion is indeed beautiful. Jefferson Davis, former President of the Confederacy, purchased the Beauvoir mansion in 1879. He wrote his memoirs and lived there until he died in 1889. The property is restored to the 1889 time period, and tours of the home are available.
At the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library, visitors can learn more about the Civil War and the Confederacy. The library has over 58,000 titles. You'll find the writings of both Jefferson Davis and his wife, Varina. Research stations provide access to an extensive genealogy of Confederate soldiers. Guests can also study military history books.
The Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum is located adjacent to the Biloxi-Gulfport International Airport. It's a haven for the aviation enthusiasts in your family, but everyone will be surprised at the amount of history and detail to be found in this little museum.
The whole family will enjoy the Mississippi Coast Model Railroad Museum. There is something appealing and fascinating about trains and railroads. You'll see lots of model trains, including themed displays. The museum is also home to the area's largest railroad-themed Lego display, with over two million pieces. There are also outdoor garden areas and multiple riding trains.
Formed during World War II, the Sea Bees are the construction battalions (CB or "SeaBee") of the US Navy. The SeaBee Heritage Center & Seabee Cinema in Gulfport is a great place to learn about these brave service members. The Center's exhibits and memorabilia come from the SeaBee's headquarters in Port Hueneme, CA.
